Green tea's caffeine is balanced out by a calming protein called L-Theanine, this means it affects the body in a more sustainable way providing a slow boost of energy. Additionally, green tea's combination of caffeine and particular antioxidants called catechins mean that it can support weight management. Its antioxidants can also help with everything from detoxification to protecting against oxidative stress and reducing cell damage.Read More

Buying organic green tea has benefits both to the environment, and to you. From a nutritional perspective, pesticides and herbicides found in non-organic production need to be detoxified thus adding to the body's toxic load. Additionally, the polyphenols (catechins) are part of the plants natural defence system against pests. If this function is replaced by chemicals the potency of beneficial antioxidants is likely to be less.Read More

Grabbing a sweet treat such as a biscuit and cake alongside your cuppa can actually be worse for your energy levels and your waist line. In the short term it gives you an energy high but quickly has a rebound effect, leading to blood sugar lows. These manifest themselves as energy dips such as the post lunch slump and cravings for more sugary or refined cards in our diet. This is a major mechanism by which people overeat and could put on weight. Revamping your tea break choices will leave you to feeling virtuous and energised for longer, whilst still allowing tasty treats.
How much and when?I recommend to my clients that they have 2-3 cups of organic green tea per day with up to 30g of dark chocolate. Having a green cuppa and 2-3 squares of dark chocolate mid afternoon is the perfect way to take in the active ingredients without having too much chocolate that it is going to be counterproductive to your waistline.

Quality dark chocolate contains a natural amino acid called tryptophan, involved in the production of the feel-good hormone serotoinin. Dark chocolate also energises through its two major energy boosting compounds, PEA (phenylethylamine) and Theobromine. PEA has been shown to increase energy levels, alertness and concentration. Theobromine is a mild natural stimulant similar to caffeine, helping to burn energy and increase our sensation of pleasure.Read More
