8 Ways To Make Running Fun (Ish!)
Posted: January 5, 2015
It’s a week into January, and it’s possible that your list of New Year’s resolutions is already looking more like wishful thinking than resolute, but fear not! We’ve pulled together eight ways you can make running fun (or at the very least, slightly more fun!), so pour yourself a cup of Clipper Green Tea, and have a squiz.
So you haven’t been jogging since it was acceptable to pair those Reebok Classics languishing at the back of your wardrobe with a pair of jeans? That’s okay! Start small and it doesn’t have to be scary, nobody’s expecting you to be Paula Radcliffe! The NHS have an amazing Couch to 5k podcast, which will very gradually take you from sofa chick to fighting fit, so just download it and get out there
Play Mind Games
So let’s face it, once the novelty of people-watching (and checking people aren’t people-watching you!) has worn off a little, jogging on the treadmill can get a little dull, but the time will go much quicker if you distract yourself! No need for constant clock watching, just set the machine to a good pace, tune into a little TVor your favourite music, and forget about those miles which are melting away – we love a little Come Dine with Me for ultimate distraction action!
Set a Goal
For some people a big scary marathon looming ever-nearer is a good motivation, for others it’s all about aiming to finish a 5km circuit without stopping to, er, ‘do up your shoelaces’… Whatever your level of fitness, if you choose a goal that you want to achieve, and then tell people about it, this can really help you force yourself out the door when the sofa is calling.
Make a Buddy
A word of warning on this one – a best buddy isn’t necessarily the best gym buddy! If you’re likely to talk each other out of getting sweaty, this won’t work, but if you know there’s someone on the office who’s keen on fitness why not go out together on a lunch time? The day will go much quicker, and you can spend your whole evening snuggled up where it’s warm.
Pretty it up!
You know when you buy an amazing new outfit, and can’t wait to wear it to work on Monday? Well, why not trying to get that feeling from your gym kit?! Invest in something that appeals to your taste of style, whether you’re all about sleek black lycra or bright pink trainers, if you’re excited to put on you’re making life a little easier for yourself.
Get Competitive – with Yourself!
There are loads of great fitness apps out there, but our favourite is from mapmyrun.com – track your speed, distance and calories as you go, it will even tell you each time you pass a mile mark! Fitness is most fun when you feel you’re doing well, so if you’re always pushing to beat what you did yesterday, it’s surprising and inspiring how quickly you can improve.
Get out there!
It’s amazing how treading the pavements makes you see your neighbourhood in a whole new way, but if you feel you’ve given your local area a good stomping, why not sign up for a ParkRun? Completely free and very low effort, these weekly events happen up and down the country, and are a great way to meet new people and track your progression.
Turn up the Tunes
Put together a big selection of up-beat tunes that you love to listen to, and maybe they’ll help you keep on going – at least to the next lamp post! Bounce around the block with Beyoncé, jog along with JLo, or keep it quick with Taylor Swift; just be warned that you may catch yourself shimmying down the street!
